Team-building exercises at All Creatures Veterinary Hospital in Salem, MA help head veterinary technician Rachel Hahn-Teichberg and her colleagues work together better as a team. So much so, that in the following video, she recommends it to other organizations and leaders because she feels teamwork is key to having a positive work environment.
Although the phrase “team-building exercises” can make some people cringe, the way to ensure these activities are effective is to identify what approaches fit your organizational culture and employees. So not only offering employees options, but asking their input before asking them to engage in an activity they might not feel is useful.
After all, forcing employees to work on teamwork skills in situations that make them uncomfortable could backfire and undermine the trust you are trying to build. So get creative about ways to build trust in your team, but ensure that it’s the right type of activity that your employees will appreciate for the most effective team building. Also keep in mind that you don’t have to go far or spend a lot of money to help employees feel they can contribute to your team and work well with their colleagues. Some of the best ideas could come from employees themselves, and you’ll never know if you don’t ask.
