Summary

This article focuses on the importance of company culture and ways to strengthen it. The article suggests that establishing purpose and values are important first steps, in addition to formulating a mission statement. In addition, organizations should focus on norms and the manner in which they develop. During norm emergence, organizations are advised to focus on communication, through leaders promoting the desired norm until employees begin to adopt it. The subsequent stage involves emulation of the desired behavior, integrating positive feedback from others when the norm is followed and negative feedback when it is not. During the final stage, norms are accepted and internalized and become “second nature” for employees. The article suggests that continuous feedback should be used to reinforce norms once they are set. In sum, company culture can be strengthened or changed through norms, and organizations are advised to consider how they develop and provide feedback for reinforcement.
