Summary

This qualitative review discusses the conceptualization and correlates of presenteeism and discusses presenteeism in relation to absenteeism. The review discusses issues with conceptualization and measurement, unknown causal positioning of presenteeism correlates, and lack of theoretical framework for selecting presenteeism instead of absenteeism. The authors present a theoretical framework to guide future research. The article concludes with recommendations for future research, including focusing on the decision-making process of employees engaging in presenteeism or absenteeism.
