Summary

The current article focuses on mindfulness at work. The results from the first study revealed that mindfulness is negatively associated with emotional exhaustion and positively associated with job satisfaction. These relationships were mediated by surface acting, suggesting that mindfulness reduces the amount of surface acting in which workers engage, which leads to lower exhaustion and higher job satisfaction. Results from the second study revealed that employees in a mindfulness intervention group reported less emotional exhaustion and greater job satisfaction than participants in the control group. The influence of the mindfulness self-training on emotional exhaustion was mediated by surface acting. Hence, the results of the two studies suggest that mindfulness is a useful self-management intervention strategy, largely having a positive impact by reducing the amount of faking emotions in which workers engage.
